The Strathclyde MBA in Glasgow     MBA     MSc Operational Research Application Forms
Welcome from the Associate Dean and Director of International Division

You have already taken the first decision – to seriously consider undertaking an MBA. By reading the information on these pages you are into the next decision phase – which business school do I choose? Not all MBA programmes or all Schools are the same and an increasingly important question asked by potential employers is …….. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR MBA?
Prof. Colin Eden

For over 200 years our University has had a mission to be ‘a place of useful learning’: that statement still drives USBS, and distinguishes us from our competitors. We believe that we offer one of the best MBA learning experiences in the world. A bold statement, but one we believe we can qualify.

We are educational pioneers – and the Strathclyde MBA, the first one year MBA programme – has been continually evolving, improving and striving to reflect current practice since1966. We are one of only 27 business schools in the world to hold international accreditation from 3 industry hallmarks of excellence – AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS. With 10 well established international centres in Europe, the Gulf and SE Asia, we have a large international student base and alumni, offering you great potential to network both during and after your MBA studies.

While many traditional MBA programmes consist of a set of unlinked single discipline classes, we recognise that the job of a senior manager involves making decisions across a range of functions. The Strathclyde MBA has therefore adopted a holistic integrated approach to management education which aims to develop executive potential by giving a broad understanding of business and management and a depth of visions essential to tomorrow’s top managers and corporate leaders.

In addition, the breadth and expertise of our faculty means that we can offer more than 25 elective subjects, ensuring that you have the best choice of specialist study areas. Unlike many other MBAs, we ensure that all our course members are experienced business people. Therefore your colleagues will truly understand the dynamics of the work-place, and be able to contribute more readily to sessions. Once onboard, we ensure our class sizes are made up of no more than 65-70 course members, allowing maximum interaction with your peers and enhancing the quality of your learning.

All in all, we aim for the Strathclyde MBA to be challenging, stimulating and enjoyable experience, which will leave you a more confident, rounded manager.

In these pages we can only give the most general of information and guidance to help with your choice. I hope that you will decide to contact us to discuss any specific questions you may have and I look forward to inviting you to one of our Open days. – Professor Colin Eden, The University of Strathclyde Business School.

The Strathclyde MBA in Glasgow
'A place of useful learning'

The University of Strathclyde received its royal charter in 1964, but its history goes back to 1796 when it was founded as Anderson's Institution. Its founder, John Anderson, left instructions in his will that a new higher education institution be established as 'a place of useful learning'. This ethos remains true today, underpinning the industrially and commercially relevant research and teaching being undertaken throughout the university.

Since 1964 Strathclyde has grown to become Scotland's third largest university. It is now among the leading universities as a centre of teaching excellence and is one of the top research universities in Scotland.

Strathclyde Business School

Strathclyde Business School (SBS) is one of the largest business schools of its kind in Europe, with over 200 academic staff and more than 3,000 full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate).

The 14 subject departments and specialist units within our faculty collaborate to provide a full and varied programme of specialist and cross-disciplinary postgraduate courses.

Managerial Relevance

At SBS we maintain close industrial and commercial links to ensure that the Strathclyde MBA always has maximum relevance to the market place.

Our academic staff members have a multidisciplinary outlook and act as the core academics for the MBA programme, building in the considerable expertise of academic staff from other SBS departments. Our academics have particular expertise in the broad area of strategic management. This expertise stems from the research interests of the staff members, who have published widely. Staff also undertake a wide range of consultancy activities both in the UK and internationally.

Our other programmes

In addition to the MBA, we offer the following programmes:
    Doctoral programmes
    MSc in Business and Management
MSc in Business Information Technology Systems
Executive Development Programmes - tailored in-company courses, executive open programmes.

Pioneering

With over 40 years' experience of developing its MBA, SBS is regarded as a pioneer and major innovator in the field of business and management. It was:

The first UK provider to offer a full-time one-year MBA programme, in 1966
The first UK provider to offer a part-time MBA programme, in 1976
The first UK provider to offer a distance learning programme, in 1983
The first UK provider to offer a DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) programme, in 1988.

Also during 1988, the Strathclyde MBA was offered for study overseas via several international centres, gaining SBS the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1993.

Currently, there are approximately 2,000 course members enrolled on the Strathclyde MBA around the world.

The Strathclyde Business School faculty is one of five faculties forming the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Triple Crown

On 7 January 2004, University of Strathclyde Business School (USBS) celebrated its remarkable achievement with the news that the US accreditation body, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), has accredited the business school.

This makes it one of a small number of prestigious schools worldwide to hold both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation. With USBS holding AMBA accreditation for all its MBA programmes, USBS now has the coveted ‘triple crown’ of accreditation, joining an elite group of business schools, making it the only Scottish school, and one of only 10 UK Business Schools with this combination. This achievement confirms the school’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement, and is the hallmark of excellence in management education.

USBS is one of 12 UK business schools to be accredited by AACSB (www.aacsb.edu).
USBS is one of 20 UK business schools to be awarded EQUIS (European Quality Improvement Systems) accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development (www.efmd.be)

USBS is one of 44 UK business schools accredited by the Association of MBAs (www.mba.org.uk) for its full time and part time programmes, and is one of only 15 for distance/ open/ flexible learning in the UK and overseas.

Consistently achieving 'excellent' ratings for the quality of research by the UK Government’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE); the Strathclyde MBA programme is aimed at managerial relevance through close industrial and commercial links to ensure the MBA retains maximum work application in the market place. Quality learning materials and delivery is the essence of the Strathclyde MBA programme with committed UK academic staff to support your face-to-face learning.
